The Story
Anthropic was pressured by the federal government to provide AI capabilities for mass domestic surveillance of Americans and for autonomous weapons systems operating without human oversight. CEO Dario Amodei said he could not in good conscience agree. The government responded by blacklisting Anthropic, designating them a supply chain risk — a label previously reserved for companies tied to foreign adversaries — and ordering every federal agency to stop using their technology. Anthropic hasn’t buckled.
Anthropic’s own staff stood with them publicly and strongly. Across the broader AI industry, hundreds of rank and file workers at competing companies signed open letters urging their own employers to hold the same line — at personal risk. Anthropic is the only organization that actually absorbed the institutional cost of saying no.
